1990s: Hurricane Andrew, Florida, USA Category 5 Hurricane Andrew clobbered south Florida during the night of 24 August 1992, with winds of up to 170 miles per hour (282km/h). It was one of the biggest natural disasters in American history, causing 61 deaths and an estimated $26.5 billion in damage. The long-lasting impact of Hurricane Andrew led to major changes to the state’s storm preparation strategies.
