1990s: Mudslides, Venezuela Incessant rains struck northern Venezuela and caused an unstoppable wall of water, boulders and debris to sweep down the side of the Ávila mountain in the Vargas state. The floods and mudslides took place in December 1999 and led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people.
