1930s: Central China Flood, China It’s thought the Central China Flood, from July to November 1931, could have killed as many as 3.7 million people, not only from drowning but as a result of the famine and disease that ensued. The most destructive flood in Chinese history, and one of the world's deadliest natural disasters, occurred after a summer of torrential rains and several severe storms. The Yangtze, Yellow and Huai Rivers all burst through their dykes in the August and September and flooded an area larger than the size of England.
