1940s: The Blizzard of '49, USA The UK wasn't the only place to be hit by severe snow fall during the 1940s. Considered the worst on record, the Blizzard of '49 covered much of South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado and Nebraska from 2 January 1949. Heavy snowfall, strong winds and freezing temperatures continued into February and subsequent snow drifts saw entire houses submerged. Around 40 people are thought to have lost their lives.
