1960s: Flood of the Arno, Florence, Italy Florence’s historic center is renowned for floods of tourists, but it was a dramatically different scene in November 1966 when the Arno River overflowed and sparked the city's most devastating natural disaster of modern times. The flooding, which reached 10 feet (3m) above street level in some places, killed 35 people and caused extensive damage to homes, buildings and treasured artworks, including some inside the Uffizi Gallery.
