1960s: North Sea Flood, Hamburg, Germany An intense storm in the North Sea on 16 and 17 February 1962 led to wide-scale flooding and destruction in parts of coastal Germany. Strong winds caused a powerful storm surge, and the port city of Hamburg suffered the most, as a sixth of it flooded. Over 6,000 buildings were destroyed and 315 people lost their lives.
