1970s: Drought, UK The UK suffered its worst drought in 150 years in 1976. A record hot summer and a lingering high pressure system saw temperatures reach above 85°F (30°C) for 18 consecutive days. Despite the delight of months of sunshine and blue skies, the country’s hottest summer in centuries meant water supplies reached dangerously low levels – so much so that a Minister for Drought was appointed. This photograph shows a man walking through Pitsford Reservoir in Northants, which completely dried up.
