1970s: The Great Bhola Cyclone, Bangladesh A deadly tropical storm that struck Bangladesh – or East Pakistan as it was known at the time – led to the greatest loss of life ever due to a cyclone. It’s thought between 300,000 and 500,000 people perished as a result of the treacherous storm that formed over the Bay of Bengal in November 1970. This image shows the coastal area of Patuakhali, which was left littered with dead cattle after the powerful winds and tidal wave wreaked havoc.
