1980s: The Great Storm of 1987, UK Now known as a sting jet, a violent storm raged across England on the 15 and 16 October 1987, resulting in 18 deaths and widespread damage, including the loss of 15 million trees. There were also casualties in France and the Channel Islands. BBC weatherman Michael Fish infamously dismissed concerns about an approaching hurricane, with the words: "Don't worry, there isn't”. Later, gusts of up to 115 miles per hour (185km/h) were recorded on the Kent coast.
