1990s: Floods, China Several catastrophic floods struck China in the 1990s, including one in 1996 that saw parts of central China suffer some of the worst flooding in two centuries. Torrential rains caused the Yangtze River to surge and breach its barriers. Thousands died and fragile communities were left devastated. According to the UN figures reported in 1996, more than 2,000 died in floods in 1995; more than 5,000 in 1994, and 5,000 lost their lives in 1991, which saw the largest flood of the decade.
